Dermatology

Here at United Medical, we offer various dermatology services, including minor skin surgery and skin biopsy. The procedures are minor enough to be performed in an office setting, where the environment is comfortable and appointments are convenient. Our primary care doctors can remove lipomas and drain abscesses, as well as perform a quick in-office biopsy of a suspicious lesion. If you have a condition for which you should see a specialist, we can provide you a referral.

Common skin conditions our doctors see and treat include:

Procedures we offer in the office include:

Excision of Lipoma

A lipoma is a fatty tumor that is a soft bump and nearly always benign. Very small lipomas may be treated with a steroid injection. On the other hand, larger lipomas require an incision on top of the lipoma to remove the tumor. A simple dressing of the wound or suturing will be required depending on the size of the incision.

Incision and Drainage of Abscesses

An abscess is a pus-filled sore that is usually caused by a bacterial infection. Incision and drainage of the abscess is necessary to prevent any further tissue damage around the affected area. An incision is made on the lining of the abscess and gauze is used to drain the pus. Once the procedure is complete, the abscess will heal very quickly. Antibiotics may be given to prevent any infections.

Skin Biopsy

A skin biopsy is the removal of a piece of skin for further examination. Biopsies are performed to diagnose any diseases that may arise from an unknown rash or lesion that a patient has. There are different ways a biopsy is performed. It depends on the type of lesion to determine which method to use.

You should always discuss your skin issues with a doctor. As your medical provider, our job is to understand your concerns and present you with all the treatment options available to you. There are a variety of ways to improve the appearance of your skin and manage the symptoms of eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, and other common skin conditions.
