Nephrology / Kidney Disease

Nephrology is the medical specialty devoted to managing kidney disease and preventing and treating renal (kidney) damage caused by a systemic (whole body) disease. The kidneys are responsible for flushing toxins from our bodies through the urinary tract, so when the kidneys are not working properly, the result is a build-up of toxins in the body. Those toxins can make you very sick, and without treatment, your symptoms will only get worse.

At United Medical, Dr. Shabnam Gupta is a board-certified nephrologist who sees patients with kidney disease at our Bayonne, NJ office. Kidney disease is often associated with or can lead to other medical problems, like heart disease, gastrointestinal conditions, and cancer.

Kidney disease includes:

  • Polycystic kidney disease (PKD)
  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD)
  • Kidney stones
  • Kidney cancer
  • Kidney failure
  • Anemia
  • Glomerulonephritis

Dr. Gupta may order a blood test and urinalysis to check for signs of kidney disease. He can also use renal ultrasound to take pictures of the urinary tract, including the kidneys, ureters, and bladder, to identify and locate a possible cyst, tumor, or kidney stones.

Treatment of kidney disease is focused on slowing the progressing and managing symptoms. Dialysis and dietary changes work well for a lot of patients. When dialysis is no longer effective, a kidney transplant may be considered.
